Project 03

I got the insprition from my two experiences of climbing snow mountain. I chose the river as a carrier. Spring melt from snow mountains, pass through the ground and crowds, finally blend in the ocean. What a charming process it is! I made efforts to reflect the state of each reach and let the real river water to tell her story to visitors.

The reason why I want to present the Yellow River is because she is the mother river of Chinese people while they may be not familiar with her. I planed to collect samples of the river water in eight different places of different provinces of the river. Due to limitation of time and season, I actually got the samples of four places during the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River.

After the first stage, i discovered more possibility on optimizing how to present my work. My work would be on display in the Netherland, which meant that its audiences were from completely different cultural background. Thus the strong symbol of the Yellow River in China would make no sence, and I decided to give up my original plan. I wanted to expore the theme about how to define the four bottles of water from "the Yellow River".

The Yellow River is too long, but when I brought some water back to Xiamen, its it still the water of the Yellow River? We call it the Yellow River for its yellow water which is attributed to a mass of suspended sediment. However, the river in Henan Province is very clear. If separating the sand out the river water,, is the filtered river water still water of the Yellow River? Also, is there any difference between the filtered river water and tap water? Maybe there are a large number of microbes in the river water, so can these microbes prove that it is the water of the Yellow River?

I took advantage of samples of each bottle of river water as culture medium to cultivate microbes, and then separated sediment from the river water. In the exhibition, I displayed the filtered river water, the sediment, photos of microbes in the culture dished (for I was worried that the culture dishes could not go through customs), and a video recording the whole activity.

However, the displayed work was not the final production. I had split the river water into different elements, thus could I reorganize them into one? Every audience would bring some dust into the gallery when they came into it. I collected some dust after finishing the exhibition, and mixed it in the filtered river water. I named it "water of the Kunstpodium T River" (for the gallery's name is the Kunstpodium T). I created an fictive river in my way.
