I created this work according to my tourism experiences and business model in my hometown. Tourist souvenirs look like the same and are lack of variety in China. I have seen that many times during my trips. Similar scenic spots, even far from others geographically, still sale identical souvenirs. It is the same with scenic spots in different types. Moreover, there is a city in my hometown called Yiwu which is famous as the biggest wholesale market of commodities in the world. Nearly half tourist souvenirs in China come from there. Its products evenare well sold overseas.
Thus I questioned value and significance of this sort of souvenirs.
I did an on-the-spot investigation in the wholesale market of commodities of Yiwu city. Most sorts of tourist souvenirs could be found and purchased at whole sale. I brought some representative souvenirs, such as wooden sword, toy snake, fridge magnet, fan of old town, Buddha beads, and metal ornament, and displayed them as a part of my work.
Then, I selected three common and easy-identified materials used for making souvenirs: cheap timber, metal and man-made silk. Plastic and resin were also common materials, but before shaping them, they did not have identifiable images. In my work, I tried to weaken materials' formal meaning and only display thier own nature. As a result, I set up the three materials into a cube - a basic geometric figure.
Water vat was the continuation of The Yellow River & The Kunstpodium T River. I wanted to create a dialogue between natural elements and artificial products.
After separating concrete images, I attempted to cover up texture of materials. Icovered those frameworks with white things, as well as the matcrials' nature. They have nothing, thus can audiences fill them with own ideas, understanding and requirements freely? Is the definition of everying given by human.
